How to Create or Change a Sign-In ID for your Nintendo Account

Steps for creating a Sign-In ID to use when signing in to your Nintendo Account.

Complete these steps

  1. Is the sign-in ID for a standard Nintendo Account or a Nintendo Account for a child?
    1. Go to the Nintendo Account website and sign in to your Nintendo Account.
    2. Select Sign-in and security settings then scroll down to the Sign-in ID section and click EditEditarModifierEditar.
    3. Enter your current Nintendo Account password and click OK.
    4. Enter your desired Sign-in ID and click Save, then click OK.
      • When setting or changing your sign-in ID, please enter an ID that will be easy to remember but also unique, so that others cannot guess it.
      • The sign-in ID must be at least 6 characters long. It cannot start with a number and cannot contain capital letters, spaces, or punctuation other than dashes or underscores.
      • You can change your sign-in ID at any time.
      • Sign-In IDs are not displayed publicly, and have no purpose in games.
    5. After setting your sign-in ID, we also recommend setting your Nintendo Account Sign-In Method Preference to "Sign-in ID only".
    Do you want to use the family group Admin account or the child’s account to change the sign-in ID?
    1. Go to the Nintendo Account website and sign in to your Admin Nintendo Account.
    2. Select Family group.
    3. Click the child's account that you want to update, then click Sign-in and security settings.
      • If this option does not appear, you are not currently signed in as the family group Admin. Only the family group admin can adjust Nintendo Account settings for users whose age makes them subject to verifiable parental consent laws.
    4. Click EditEditarModifierEditar in the Sign-in ID section.
    5. You may be prompted to confirm your identity by re-entering your password, re-authenticating with your passkey, and/or by verifying your email address.
      • Password entry

        If prompted to enter your password, enter it then select OK.

      • Passkey re-authentication

        If you have enabled passkey authentication, you can confirm your identity by signing in using your passkey.

      • Email address verification

        If prompted to verify your email address, select Submit to have an email with a verification code sent to the email address associated with your Nintendo Account. Locate the code in your email and enter it in the "Verification code" box, then click Submit.

        • If you do not receive the email, but you have registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account, select Use another method to verify your identity on the "E-mail address verification" screen, then Submit. A code will be sent via text message to your phone number—enter it in the "Verification Code" box and select Submit to verify your identity.
        • If you have not registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account (or the verification text message does not arrive) and do not receive the email, please follow our steps for Did Not Receive an Email from Nintendo.
    6. If you have set up 2-step verification, you may be prompted to enter an additional code. Launch the Google Authenticator app on your smart device, enter the code it displays, and click Authenticate.
      • No access to Google Authenticator

        If you do not currently have access to the app, select Use another method to verify your identityThe 'Nintendo Account 2-Step Verification' screen with 'Use another method to verify your identity' indicated. and use one of the backup codes you received and saved in a safe place when setting up the 2-step verification.

      • No access to backup codes

        If you do not currently have access to your backup codes, select Use another method to verify your identity on the "Enter backup code" screen The 'Enter backup code screen' with 'Use another method to verify your identity' indicated.. An email with a verification code will be sent to the email address associated with your Nintendo Account. Locate the code in your email and enter it in the "Verification code" box, then click Verify.

        • If you do not receive the email, but you have registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account, select Use another method to verify your identity on the "E-mail address verification" screen, then Submit. A code will be sent via text message to your phone number—enter it in the "Verification Code" box and select Submit to verify your identity.
        • If you have not registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account (or the verification text message does not arrive) and do not receive the email, please follow our steps for Did Not Receive an Email from Nintendo.
    7. Enter the desired Sign-in ID in the "New sign-in ID" field and click Save, then click OK.
      • When setting or changing a child's sign-in ID, please enter an ID that will be easy to remember but also unique, so that others cannot guess it.
      • The sign-in ID must be at least 6 characters long. It cannot start with a number and cannot contain capital letters, spaces, or punctuation other than dashes or underscores.
      • You can change the sign-in ID at any time.
