How to Update Tetris® 99

Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch - OLED Model

Follow these steps to update Tetris® 99, or review the software's update history.

Note
  • This update must be applied in order to use the game’s Internet features.
  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the game's online features.
  • Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.
  • The update will download and install automatically if the console is connected to the Internet and the Software Auto-Updates setting is enabled on your Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console. To ensure you have space to download the update, please review our storage tips for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.

On January 21, 2026, a new software update for Tetris® 99 became available for download. Please take a moment to download and install this update while your Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console is connected to the Internet.

Complete these steps

  1. Connect your Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console to the internet.
    • How to connect Nintendo Switch 2 to a wireless home network
      1. Place the Nintendo Switch 2 console within 10 feet of the wireless router so there will be a strong wireless signal.

      4. Select the appropriate network name (SSID) from the list.
      5. Use the onscreen keyboard to enter the network's wireless password, if one is required. Entering wireless network password using on-screen keyboard in the System Settings on Nintendo Switch 2
      6. The connection will be tested. Once the test is complete, select OK.
        • If the connection test fails, an error code and message will appear. Search for our support article on the error code for steps to troubleshoot the connection.

    • How to connect Nintendo Switch to a wireless home network
      1. Place the Nintendo Switch console within 10 feet of the wireless router to ensure a strong wireless signal.
      2. Select Settings from the HOME Menu System Settings icon highlighted on the HOME Menu Screen on the Nintendo Switch console.
      3. Select Internet, and then Internet Settings Internet is selected on the System Settings menu on the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch will automatically search for near-by Wi-Fi signals.
      4. Select the appropriate network name (SSID) from the list.
      5. If prompted, use the onscreen keyboard to enter the network's wireless password Onscreen keyboard displayed when a network's wireless password is required.
      6. The Nintendo Switch will test the Internet connection. Once the test is complete, select OK to complete the process.

  2. From the HOME Menu, select the icon for the software you wish to update without starting the game or application.
  3. Press the + Button or – Button on your controller. The current version number will display under the software title.
  4. Select Software Update followed by Via the Internet.

Latest update: Ver. 2.6.0 (Released January 21, 2026)

  • Adjustments have been made to make the game more comfortable to play.

*Ver. 2.1.0 through 2.5.0 are compatible with local communication (“Local Arena” mode). Ver. 2.0.0 is not compatible with local communication. Please keep each other's update versions in mind.

      • You can now exchange game tickets for some previously released event themes (Special Themes) using the Customize menu. Each event theme requires an exchange of 30 tickets.

      • The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few additional bugs.

    Compatible with Ver. 2.1.0 via Local Network (Local Arena). Not compatible with Ver 2.0.0 or earlier via Local Network. Please check each system’s update data version.

  • Ver. 2.1.0 (Released December 10, 2019)
    • Added Team Battle mode.
    • Added Password Match to Tetris 99 and Team Battle modes.
    • Enabled additional button assignment customization options.
    • Made previously released event themes (Maximus Cup 01-04) available. Event themes can be unlocked by exchanging 30 tickets.
    • Added a new Team Battle-themed player icon.
    • The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few bugs.
  • Ver. 2.0.0 (Released September 5, 2019)
    • Design / Functions
      • Main Menu screen redesigned.
      • New Tetris 99 Invictus mode added. It is unlocked by achieving Tetris Maximus in Tetris 99 mode.
      • New daily missions added.
      • New themes added. Complete daily missions to earn tickets that can be exchanged for new themes.
      • New player icons added.
      • Icon missions added. Complete icon missions to unlock new player icons.
      • Staff credits added.
    • Additional Contents
      • Now supporting additional (paid) DLC modes Local Arena and 2P Share Battle. The new DLC is playable without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. For details on DLC, please visit tetris99.nintendo.com.
    • General
      • The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few bugs.
  • Ver. 1.3.0 (Released May 9, 2019)
    • Functionality
      • Players can now obtain distributed themes.
      • Players can now change themes and player icons.
      • Players can now view records of their most recent ten matches.
    • Added content
      • CPU Battle Mode and Marathon Mode paid DLC has been added.
        • You can purchase and play this additional content even if you do not have a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online.
