Frequently Asked Questions
What controllers can you use to play?
Joy-Con 2 controllers and Joy-Con controllers can both be used for most sports. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller are not supported.
Skateboarding uses mouse controls, so only Joy-Con 2 controllers are supported.
For more information on how many players each sport supports and the number of controllers required, please check the Nintendo Store page for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.
Why can't I proceed past the screen that says "Press L + R on the controller you want to use"?
If you are using your Nintendo Switch 2 console in handheld mode with the Joy-Con 2 controllers attached, you won't be able to continue. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort cannot be played in handheld mode.
Detach the Joy-Con 2 controllers from the console, attach and wear the Joy-Con 2 straps, and use the controllers wirelessly to play.
Note: On this screen, you must press the L Button and R Button (or ZL Button and ZR Button) at the same time.
Why does my character sometimes not move the way I expected from how I moved my controller?
If the game does not respond properly to motion controls with your Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controllers, try the following:
Ensure there is nothing causing wireless interference between the controllers and the console
- Make sure the console is not placed behind a TV, under a metal object, or within four feet of other wireless devices (wireless speakers, cordless phones, etc.).
- If you have an unlicensed cover or other accessory attached to your Nintendo Switch 2 console or controllers, try removing it.
Calibrate the motion controls
Follow our troubleshooting steps for motion controls with the controller you're using:
- Joy-Con 2 Motion Controls Are Not Responding Correctly or Cannot Be Calibrated
- Joy-Con Motion Controls Are Not Responding Correctly or Cannot Be Calibrated
Why did I receive a message saying "Your Joy-Con Connection Is Unstable" while playing?
If you receive this message, it's possible that there may be wireless interference issues between the console and the Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controller. If this message appears regularly and you notice that characters don't move correctly when shaking the controller, we recommend troubleshooting for wireless interference with your controllers:
- Joy-Con 2 Not Responding or Responding Incorrectly When Used Wirelessly
- Joy-Con Not Responding or Responding Incorrectly When Used Wirelessly
What gameplay modes are available if you don't have a Nintendo Switch Online membership?
In Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, you can play all 12 sports and Jump Rope with local players, even without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The number of players and required controllers vary by sport. (When playing solo, you can play against the computer.)
To play with others in Online Matches (Pro League), Casual Online Play, and Friend Lobbies, a Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet connection are required.
Why am I receiving a message saying "Your online play has repeatedly ended unexpectedly so you can't play for now" when I try to start a match using Online Match or Casual Online Play?
In order to provide an enjoyable online play environment, if you disconnect multiple times during online play, you will not be able to play Nintendo Switch Sports Resort online for a certain amount of time, regardless of whether the disconnections were intentional.
Wait for a while until you are able to play online again. You can continue to enjoy other features of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort in the meantime.
To avoid this temporary restriction, try not to disconnect or leave an online match until after the match ends. If your console is disconnecting during online play unintentionally, follow our steps to improve your network environment.
Why is a signal strength icon displayed in the lower right of the screen when I play online?
When the connection quality of one or more participants (including yourself) is low, an icon will be displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen. If you notice this icon displaying frequently, we recommend troubleshooting your network environment.
Even when playing on the same Nintendo Switch 2 console, why are some older items available for one user but not another?
For both This Week's Items and This Month's Items, if you obtain all the items that are available, you can earn items that you missed previously instead.
However, this only includes items that were available starting from the first day the user played the game, and items that became available after that point.
As a result, when multiple users on a single Nintendo Switch 2 console have save data for Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, the items available to each user may differ depending on when they first started playing the game.
Additionally, the items offered to each player in This Week's Items may differ between players in general. This Month's Items are the same for each player.
When are items updated?
The Item Center has This Week's Items and This Month's Items.
This Week's Items are updated each week on Wednesday night, and This Month's Items are updated on the first Wednesday night of each month. The exact time depends on your time zone.
What is the difference between Casual Online Play and Friend Lobby?
Both modes are for online play.
In Casual online Play, you will be matched with players around the world to compete in randomly selected sports. The results of the match are not recorded, so you can play casually without worrying about winning or losing. If you prefer playing certain sports, you can also set the matchmaking to only search for those sports.
A Friend Lobby is where you can gather your Nintendo Switch 2 friends and play whichever sports you choose. Up to eight players can be in one Friend Lobby, and you can split into groups to play different sports.
For additional information about multiplayer, please check out How to Start a Multiplayer Game (Nintendo Switch Sports Resort).
Can two players play in the Pro League together?
Pro League is a mode that only supports joining online as an individual player. You can raise your rank by winning online matches while playing solo, and once you have made it to rank E+ or higher, your rank may drop if you continue to lose matches.
It's possible to play these online matches together with two players in certain sports, but the results won't change either player's rank.
For additional information about multiplayer, please check out How to Start a Multiplayer Game (Nintendo Switch Sports Resort).
Can you change your dominant hand settings?
You can change this setting with the following steps:
- Select Options.
- Select the user you want to change settings for.
- Select User Settings.
- Select Dominant Hand.
If you haven't played a particular sport yet, you may not be able to change the setting here. You'll be prompted to set your dominant hand when playing that sport for the first time.
Can you check the tutorial again for a sport you've already played, or view advice on how to play the sport?
You can view available tutorial information or advice for a given sport by selecting that sport and then selecting either Advice, or Advice / How to Play and then the option you want to review information from. Some sports do not have How to Play information.
