Joy-Con 2 Control Sticks Are Not Responding or Respond Incorrectly

What to do

1. Check if the stick inputs on the controller have been remapped.
   • How to check if control stick inputs have been remapped.

     You can tell that a controller's inputs have been remapped because throughout different menus, a wrench icon will be displayed beside the controller in-use at the bottom-left corner of the system screen.

     

     
   • Inputs have been remapped
     • If they have been remapped, we recommend the control stick configuration is set to the standard inputs while troubleshooting.
     • Alternatively, set the system to sleep mode. Upon waking up the system, you’ll have the option to reset the controller inputs.
2. Confirm that the dock is connected using a Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
   • The HDMI cable included with the console is an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
   • If the HDMI cable being used is not an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, swap it out for a supported HDMI cable.
3. With the Joy-Con 2 attached to the console, verify that they register correctly as attached within the Controllers screen, accessible from the HOME Menu.

4. Ensure your console has the latest system update.

     1. Select the System Settings on the HOME Menu.
        
        
        
        
     2. Scroll down through the System Settings menu and select System.
     3. Select System Update, to start the system update process.
        
        
        
        
        • During the process, the system will first perform a check to determine if a new system update is available.
        • If an update is available, the download process will begin automatically.
5. Update the controller firmware.

     1. Ensure your console has the latest system update installed.
     2. Select System Settings from the HOME Menu.
     3. Scroll down to Controllers & Accessories.
     4. In the Controllers & Accessories options, scroll down and select Update Controllers to begin updating any controllers that are powered on and paired with the console.
        • If multiple controllers are paired to the console, the controllers will be updated one controller at a time.
        • If the update stops before it can be completed, try this step again.

6. Remove any skins or covers from the problematic Joy-Con 2, if any, and calibrate the control sticks.
7. If the issue is occurring with a specific game or application, try the following:
   • Check for any available software updates for that game.
   • Check the electronic manual for that game. Some games, such as Mario Kart World, support in-game tilt controls. If these are activated, it may seem as if the control sticks are not responding correctly. If this is the case, the in-game tilt controls may need to be deactivated.
