How to Perform a System Update and Enable Text to Speech During Nintendo Switch 2 First-Time Setup
Follow these steps to set up your Nintendo Switch 2 and perform a system update to enable Text to Speech.
Information
Text to Speech on Nintendo Switch 2 reads out on-screen text in the HOME Menu, Album, and System Settings. In addition to on-screen text, the feature reads out information that assists with operations, such as the cursor's position. You can also set different voice types, reading speeds, and volume levels.
The following system languages support this feature (some may require an additional system update): US English, Canadian French, Latin American Spanish, UK English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Russian.
A system update can be performed once an Internet connection has been saved during first-time setup. After completing the system update and reaching the prompt to transfer data from a Nintendo Switch console, you can hold the Y Button to enable Text to Speech for the rest of first-time setup and for other supported system menus.
If you live in an area with many nearby wireless networks, you may need assistance selecting your home network during this process. A wired connection can also be set up if you have an ethernet cable and access to your router or gateway. Guidance for both options is included below.
Complete these steps
Note: First-time setup must be started in handheld mode. You can use TV mode after the first few steps, if needed to set up an Internet connection more easily.
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the sides of the console. They attach magnetically and will snap into place. The left Joy-Con 2 controller, with the − Button near the control stick, should be attached so that button is near the same corner as the POWER Button and volume buttons (described next).
- Press the POWER Button. This is a round button located on the upper left corner of the system, to the left of the volume buttons which stick out slightly.
- The console will turn on and music may begin to play. If you don't hear it, turn the volume up slightly by pressing the right of the two volume buttons.
- The first screen is for language selection. The languages used in our region which support this feature are in the following positions, and you can use either control stick or the directional buttons to navigate the menu:
- English (US): Second position on the left. Move down one position from where the menu starts.
- Français (Canada): Fourth position on the left. Move down three positions from where the menu starts.
- Español (Latinoamérica): Seventh position on the left. Move down six positions from where the menu starts.
- Press the A Button to select the language. On the right Joy-Con 2 controller, this is the right-most of the four buttons above the control stick.
- The next screen is for region selection. If you selected one of the languages listed above, press the A Button again to select The Americas as the region.
- The next screen covers the End-User License Agreement. You can also review this text on our website. Once you're ready to proceed, navigate down one menu option and press the A Button to accept the agreement. Then, navigate one menu option down and press the A Button to select Next.
- The next screen is for setting up an Internet connection. Press the A Button to select Internet Settings.
- To set up a wired connection:
- Open the back cover of the Nintendo Switch 2 dock. The front of the dock is flat and the back is thicker and more rounded towards the top. At the top of the back side of the dock, there is a long and thin opening. Gently push outward at both ends of this opening to remove the back cover, then place it flat behind the dock so you can re-attach it later. There are three ports inside and the surface around them is more smooth. From top to bottom, there is a USB-C port, an HDMI port, and a LAN port.
- Connect the AC adapter to the USB-C port on the dock and to a wall outlet. Connect the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the dock and to an HDMI port on your television or computer monitor. Connect an ethernet cable to the LAN port on the dock and to a LAN port on your router or gateway. Push the cables toward the bottom right side of the dock, where they will come out from the back cover.
- To close the back cover of the dock, lay the back cover down behind the dock with the longer flat edge aligned against the bottom of the dock. Slide the longer flat edge to the left along the bottom of the dock until it stops. Lift the opposite curved end up toward the dock while keeping the bottom of the back cover aligned against the bottom of the dock. The top of the back cover should snap into place. You may need to adjust the position of the cables to close it completely.
- Position the console so that the console screen and Joy-Con 2 control sticks face in the same direction as the front panel on the dock, then lower the console into the dock. If aligned correctly, the audio output will change and sound will no longer be coming from the console speakers.
- Locate the release button on the back of each Joy-Con 2 controller. This is a small button directly on the opposite side from the − Button or + Button near the top of each controller.
- Press the release button on the back of each Joy-Con 2 controller away from the console until you hear a strong "click", then gently pull both controllers away from the console to detach them.
- Using either control stick or the directional buttons, scroll to the bottom of the current menu, until you hear a lower pitched audio tone compared to the other menu movement tones. Press the A Button to select "Wired Connection". Skip the next set of steps covering a wireless connection.

You can enter text with the on-screen keyboard using the touch screen or navigate the keyboard using the Joy-Con 2 controllers and press the A Button to enter each character.
