Buttons or Switches Are Not Responding or Respond Incorrectly

Nintendo 3DS

The information in this article can help you when:

  • A button (or combination of buttons/switches) isn't working as it should.
  • Game characters aren't responding correctly, or responding at all.
  • Game characters seem to move unexpectedly or on their own.

What to do

  1. If this only occurs with a specific game or application, check the game or application manual for controller configurations or settings that may be affecting the button's use.
  2. Clean the buttons.
  3. If you are using a screen protector on the touch pad and multiple buttons are not responding, remove the screen protector.
  4. Clean around the Touch Screen to ensure it is free of any debris or smudges. If the touch screen is registering as being pressed, then it may cause the buttons to act unresponsive. This step can be skipped if the issue is with a switch or slider.
  5. Recalibrate the touch screen.
  6. Recalibrate the circle pad.
  7. Press and hold the POWER Button down until the system powers off. Power the system on and see if the issue persists.

Situation not resolved

If the issue persists, the system will need to be serviced.

The following systems are available for service from Nintendo:

  • New Nintendo 2DS XL - Serial numbers begin with "NW"

For your convenience, Nintendo provides a quick and easy-to-use online service request process.
