How to Change Your Router’s Wireless Mode

Complete these steps
- Log in to your router's settings.
- Search through your router for phrases such as "mode," "wireless mode," or "802.11 mode." The terms and locations change drastically from router to router. For example:
- D-Link
The wireless mode is commonly located by selecting Setup, Wireless Settings, and then the Manual Wireless Network Setup button.
- Netgear
The wireless mode is commonly located by selecting Setup and then looking under Wireless Settings.
- Belkin
The wireless mode is commonly located by selecting the Wireless tab and then looking under Channel and SSID.
- Linksys
The wireless mode is commonly located by selecting Wireless and then Basic Wireless Settings.
- D-Link
After locating the wireless mode, most routers provide a drop-down menu with different wireless mode options. Select the appropriate wireless mode and then choose the router specific option to save or apply the settings.
Some router manufactures may not list the wireless mode by the common 802.11 b/g/n and instead choose to list these as the max wireless speeds (i.e. "Up to 54Mbps" or "Up to 300Mbps"). With these routers, "Up to 54Mbps" is the equivalent of the 802.11g/b setting in other routers.
