How to Use the LAN Play Feature of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Steps for how to set up local LAN play with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
Note
- If two players are playing on the same console, each player will use either:
- One Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con Controller (Left or Right) each, or
- One Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller or Nintendo Switch Pro-Controller each.
- Please note that the Joy-Con 2 Controller and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller are only compatible with Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. The Joy-Con Controller and the Nintendo Switch Pro-Controller are compatible with both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch consoles.
Before you start
You will need:
- Your Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console
- Nintendo Switch 2 dock or Nintendo Switch dock
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe software, updated to the latest version

How to update game software
- Ensure the console is connected to the Internet.
- From the HOME Menu, select (but do not start) the icon for the software you wish to update.
- Press the + Button or – Button on your controller, then select Software Update followed by Via the Internet.

How to update game software
- LAN Adapter (only required when using a dock without LAN port)
- Ethernet cable
- Television
- A wired router to connect the consoles together via a wired Internet connection. Depending on the number of consoles connected, a networking switch may also be needed to connect all players together.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe supports LAN play, allowing players to connect multiple Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch consoles together over a wired connection for the ultimate Mario Kart competition with up to 12 players.

How to create a wired Internet connection on Nintendo Switch 2
Important: The Nintendo Switch 2 console must be docked to be able to connect online using the wired connection type.
- Connect an Ethernet cable to the Nintendo Switch 2 dock and then connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your router or gateway.
- Place the Nintendo Switch 2 console into the dock.
- On the console, select System Settings on the HOME Menu.
- Select Internet, and then Internet SettingsConfiguración de internetParamètres InternetConfigurações de internet. Your console will automatically search for nearby wireless network signals first.
- Once the option is available, select Wired ConnectionConexión con cableConnexion par câbleConexão por cabo.
- Select Connect to the Internet via Wired Connection.
- The connection will be tested. Once the test is complete, select OK.
- If the connection test fails, an error code and message will appear, which can help you troubleshoot connection errors.
- We also recommend setting up a wireless internet connection. This enables you to connect online even when your Nintendo Switch 2 is not placed in the dock.

How to create a wired Internet connection on Nintendo Switch – OLED Model
Important: The Nintendo Switch – OLED Model console must be used in TV mode to connect online using the wired connection type.
- Connect an Ethernet cable to the Nintendo Switch dock with LAN port and then connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your router or gateway.
- Place the Nintendo Switch console into the Nintendo Switch dock.
- On the Nintendo Switch console, select System Settings on the HOME Menu.
- Select Internet, and then Internet Settings
. Nintendo Switch will automatically search for nearby Wi-Fi signals.
- Once the option is available, select Wired Connection.
- Select Connect to the Internet via Wired Connection.
- Nintendo Switch will test the Internet connection. Once the test is complete, select OK.
- If the connection test fails, an error code and message will appear, which can help you troubleshoot connection errors.
- If possible, we also recommend setting up a wireless internet connection. This enables you to connect online even when your Nintendo Switch is not placed in the Nintendo Switch dock.

Important
- All of the consoles must be connected to the same, shared router to use the LAN Play feature.
- If your router does not have enough LAN ports for every console you wish to connect, a networking switch can be connected to the router to provide additional LAN ports.

How to create a wired Internet connection on Nintendo Switch 2
- When all of the desired consoles are connected, have a player create a room and act as a lobby host.
- Start Mario Kart 8 Deluxe from the HOME Menu.
- From the game's menu, hold the L Button and R Button, and then press the left stick in.
- If done correctly, the "Wireless Play" option will change to "LAN Play".
- If done correctly, the "Wireless Play" option will change to "LAN Play".
- Select LAN Play.
- Select Create Room.
- Have the other players join the room.
- Start Mario Kart 8 Deluxe from the HOME Menu.
- From the game's menu, hold the L Button and R Button, and and then press the left stick in.
- If done correctly, the "Wireless Play" option will change to "LAN Play".
- If done correctly, the "Wireless Play" option will change to "LAN Play".
- Select LAN Play.
- Select the name of the host player, displayed under Lobby.
- Have the host select the game type and settings, and then start the match.
- After selecting their character and kart and while viewing the garage, have the host player press the A Button to bring up the game settings.
- Use the first option to select the race or battle type (i.e. 150cc, Balloon Battle, etc.).
- Use the options that appear to select the race settings, such as the Team, Item, and Race Count settings.
- Once the appropriate settings have been selected, and all the players have joined the lobby, press the A Button again to confirm the settings.
- After the players in the room have selected their characters and karts, players will be asked the select their preferred track, and then the match will start.
- After selecting their character and kart and while viewing the garage, have the host player press the A Button to bring up the game settings.
