Blank or No Image on the Television, or the Wii U Console Will Not Power On

Wii U

The information in this article can help you when:

  • You're using the Wii U and a blank screen shows on the television.
  • The Wii U console will not power on.
  • The Wii U console seems frozen.

What to do

  1. When did this issue first occur?
    • Ensure you are turning the TV and Wii U on in the correct order.
      1. Power off the Wii U console and television.
      2. Power on the television.
      3. Wait fifteen seconds, and then locate the correct input channel for your connection.
      4. Power on the Wii U console. After a few seconds, you should see a screen prompting you to pair the Wii U GamePad on the television. If you do not immediately see this screen, wait an additional fifteen seconds.
    • Try using a different cable.
      • Try a Wii AV Cable or a Wii Component Video Cable. You will need to ensure the TV is set to the correct input settings if you switch cables.
      • It can take up to a minute for the Wii U console to detect that a Wii AV Cable/Wii Component Video Cable is connected. Once a minute has passed, ensure the TV is set to the correct input channel.
      • Once you are done, reconnect the Wii U with your HDMI cable and change the TV input settings to HDMI.
    • Try using a different TV.
      • If you have another television, attempt to use it to set up the Wii U. Once the Wii U is set up, you will be able to move the Wii U back to your original television.

    1. Remove any unlicensed accessories from the Wii U, including SD cards and USB storage devices.
    2. Reset the Wii U console by pressing and holding down the power button on the front of the Wii U console for six seconds.
      • If the Wii U console does not reset, unplug the AC adapter from the wall outlet, wait 15 seconds, and then plug it back in.
    3. Attempt to power on the Wii U console.
    4. If possible, press the eject button on the Wii U to remove any discs.
What is the status of the LED on the front of the Wii U console?
    • Use the Wii U GamePad to ensure that the correct connection type is being used for your setup.
      • If you find that the settings are correctly set for the type of cable you are using, but you are still unable to get a color picture, switch the settings to the opposite setting, save it, and then switch it back to the correct setting.
        • Example: You are using a Wii AV Cable, the Wii U is set to non-HDMI, but the picture is in black and white. Switch the setting to HDMI, save it, sent it back to non-HDMI, and then save it.
    • Troubleshoot the Wii U Connection.
    • Try a different cable or television if one is available.
