What Is the Difference Between a Nintendo Network ID and a Local User?
Nintendo 3DS
A local user is a user that has not yet created a Nintendo Network ID on their system. Local users can do the following on a system in the Nintendo 3DS family:
- Create a Mii and local user nickname
- Save game progress
- Use most features for applications that require Internet access
- Download software through Nintendo eShop
- Access online game modes (examples include online multiplayer, voice chat, downloadable content, and global rankings)
Local users also have the option to create or link a Nintendo Network ID with their system. Before March 27, 2023, players with a Nintendo Network ID could also Download demos or free software from the Nintendo eShop.
- If a Nintendo Network ID is linked both to a Wii U and a Nintendo 3DS system, the Nintendo eShop balance of each will be consolidated and shared.
