What Is a Nintendo Network ID?
The Nintendo Network is the service that provides content via the Internet. It gave access to a wide range of network services, such as playing games with people from around the world, downloading software and content, and exchanging images and messages.
A Nintendo Network ID can be linked to one Wii U and one system in the Nintendo 3DS family.
Wii U
Prior to April 8, 2024, in order to use any of the Wii U features available through the Nintendo Network, you must first have created or linked a Nintendo Network ID. Once a Nintendo Network ID was set up, you were able to access all of the online features available through the Wii U.
Nintendo 3DS family
Prior to March 27, 2023, a Nintendo Network ID was required in order to download demos or free software from Nintendo eShop, but it was not required for purchases in the Nintendo eShop. A NNID is not required to use any of the system's other online features.
Off-Device
Some Nintendo Network services can be accessed from a non-Nintendo device (smartphone, PC) using your Nintendo Network ID.
