How to Link an Existing Nintendo Network ID to a Wii U

In this article, you'll learn how to link an existing Nintendo Network ID to a Wii U.

Note
  • You may find our information on creating a Nintendo Network ID helpful, if you have not yet created one.
  • A Nintendo Network ID can be created on a Wii U and then linked to a Nintendo 3DS family system, or vice versa.
    • In the United States and Canada, it is not possible to create a Nintendo Network ID for a child using a Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family system. Please contact Nintendo Customer Support by calling 1-800-255-3700 if you wish to create a Nintendo Network ID for your child.
  • Each Nintendo Network ID can be associated to one Wii U console and one Nintendo 3DS family system.

What to do

  1. Where was the Nintendo Network ID created?
    1. Access the User Settings on an existing Mii, and select Create/Link Nintendo Network ID.
      • If you are creating a new user account on the system, select Add New User from the Wii U User Select screen.
    2. Enter the Parental Control PIN if required, then select OK.
    3. Select Next to proceed through the screens.
    4. When asked if you already have a Nintendo Network ID, select Yes.
      • If you are uncertain whether you have already created a Nintendo Network ID, select I Don't Know and review the information there.
    5. Select Next.
    6. When asked if you would like to link your existing Nintendo Network ID, select Yes.
    7. Select Next, then OK to continue.
    8. Enter the Nintendo Network ID to be linked, then select OK.
    9. Enter the password associated to the Nintendo Network ID, then select OK.
    10. Enter the e-mail address associated to the Nintendo Network ID, then select OK.
    11. Review the information you've entered to verify that it is correct. Select OK.
      • If any information needs to be changed, select Change in the appropriate area and make any needed updates.
    12. The system will verify that the information is correct. When prompted, select Link to link the existing Nintendo Network ID to the system.
    13. When asked to associate a Mii to the account, select OK twice.
    14. Select Choose from Existing Mii Characters.
      • If you choose to associate a new Mii, select Create/Receive to create one.
    15. Any Mii characters already associated to the Nintendo Network ID will appear. Tap the one you want, then select Register twice.
    16. Select OK twice to complete the link and return to the Wii U HOME Menu.

    Once a Nintendo Network ID has been associated to a Wii U console, it can be moved to a new user on the same console where the ID was originally created, or to a different Wii U using the System Transfer process. Each Nintendo Network ID can only be associated to one Wii U console at a time.

    1. Access the User Settings on an existing Mii, and select Create/Link Nintendo Network ID.
      • If you are creating a new user account on the system, select Add New User from the Wii U User Select screen.
    2. Enter the Parental Control PIN if required, then select OK.
    3. Select Next to proceed through the screens.
    4. When asked if you already have a Nintendo Network ID, select Yes.
      • If you are uncertain whether you have already created a Nintendo Network ID, select I Don't Know and review the information there.
    5. Select Next.
    6. When asked if you would like to link your existing Nintendo Network ID, select Yes.
    7. Select Next, then OK to continue.
    8. Enter the Nintendo Network ID to be linked, then select OK.
    9. Enter the password associated to the Nintendo Network ID, then select OK.
    10. Enter the e-mail address associated to the Nintendo Network ID, then select OK.
    Are you prompted to set up parental controls or enter your PIN?
    1. Set up Parental Controls if you have not already done so.
    2. Review the information on the screen. Select OK, then select Link.
    3. An authentication code will be sent to the e-mail address that is associated to the parent. When prompted, select Send.
    4. Select OK.
    5. An e-mail will arrive within an hour, with a 5-digit authorization code. Enter the code and select OK.
    6. When asked to associate a Mii to the account, select OK twice.
    7. Select Choose from Existing Mii Characters.
      • If you choose to associate a new Mii, select Create/Receive to create one.
    8. Any Mii characters already associated to the Nintendo Network ID will appear. Tap the one you want, then select Register twice.
    9. Select OK to complete the link and return to the Wii U HOME Menu.
    1. Review the information you've entered to verify that it is correct. Select OK.
      • If any information needs to be changed, select Change
