How to Change Your Nintendo Account Password

Steps for updating the password for your Nintendo Account.

What to do

Go to the Nintendo Account website and sign in to your Nintendo Account.

When signed in you can update your password, or, if you are the admin in a family group, you can update the password for any supervised accounts in the family group.

  • How to change your password
    1. Select Sign-in and security settings, and then select EditEditarModifierEditar in the Password section.

    2. You may be prompted to confirm your identity by re-entering your password, re-authenticating with your passkey, and/or by verifying your email address.
      • Password entry

        If prompted to enter your password, enter it then select OK.

      • Passkey re-authentication

        If you have enabled passkey authentication, you can confirm your identity by signing in using your passkey.

      • Email address verification

        If prompted to verify your email address, select Submit to have an email with a verification code sent to the email address associated with your Nintendo Account. Locate the code in your email and enter it in the "Verification code" box, then click Submit.

        • If you do not receive the email, but you have registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account, select Use another method to verify your identity on the "E-mail address verification" screen, then Submit. A code will be sent via text message to your phone number—enter it in the "Verification Code" box and select Submit to verify your identity.
        • If you have not registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account (or the verification text message does not arrive) and do not receive the email, please follow our steps for Did Not Receive a Nintendo Account Identity Verification Email.
    3. If you have set up 2-step verification, you may be prompted to enter an additional code. Launch the Google Authenticator app on your smart device, enter the code it displays, and click Authenticate.
      • No access to Google Authenticator

        If you do not currently have access to the app, select Use another method to verify your identityThe 'Nintendo Account 2-Step Verification' screen with 'Use another method to verify your identity' indicated. and use one of the backup codes you received and saved in a safe place when setting up the 2-step verification.

      • No access to backup codes

        If you do not currently have access to your backup codes, select Use another method to verify your identity on the "Enter backup code" screen The 'Enter backup code screen' with 'Use another method to verify your identity' indicated.. An email with a verification code will be sent to the email address associated with your Nintendo Account. Locate the code in your email and enter it in the "Verification code" box, then click Verify.

        • If you do not receive the email, but you have registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account, select Use another method to verify your identity on the "E-mail address verification" screen, then Submit. A code will be sent via text message to your phone number—enter it in the "Verification Code" box and select Submit to verify your identity.
        • If you have not registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account (or the verification text message does not arrive) and do not receive the email, please follow our steps for Did Not Receive a Nintendo Account Identity Verification Email.
    4. Enter and confirm a new password.
      • Password requirements
        • Passwords must be at least 8 characters long.
        • Passwords must include a combination of characters from 2 of the following categories: letters, numbers, and punctuation.
      • Message: Please do not include your date of birth.

        Do not include your birthdate as part of the password. An error message will appear if you include your birthdate, and you will be prompted to select a different password.

      • Message: The password for this account is not secure.

        If the message "Based on information received from an external source, the password for this account is not secure." appears while you are creating or changing your Nintendo Account password, we suggest using a different password.

    5. Click Submit to update the password.
  • How to change the password for a supervised account
    1. Do you want to use the family group Admin account or the supervised account to change the password?
      1. Select Family group.
      2. Click the child's account that you want to update, then click Sign-in and security settings.
      3. Click EditEditarModifierEditar in the Password section.
      4. You may be prompted to confirm your identity by re-entering your password, re-authenticating with your passkey, and/or by verifying your email address.
        • Password entry

          If prompted to enter your password, enter it then select OK.

        • Passkey re-authentication

          If you have enabled passkey authentication, you can confirm your identity by signing in using your passkey.

        • Email address verification

          If prompted to verify your email address, select Submit to have an email with a verification code sent to the email address associated with your Nintendo Account. Locate the code in your email and enter it in the "Verification code" box, then click Submit.

          • If you do not receive the email, but you have registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account, select Use another method to verify your identity on the "E-mail address verification" screen, then Submit. A code will be sent via text message to your phone number—enter it in the "Verification Code" box and select Submit to verify your identity.
          • If you have not registered a phone number to your Nintendo Account (or the verification text message does not arrive) and do not receive the email, please follow our steps for Did Not Receive a Nintendo Account Identity Verification Email.
      5. If you have set up 2-step verification, you may be prompted to enter an additional code. Launch the Google Authenticator app on your smart device, enter the code it displays, and click Authenticate.

      6. The nickname and icon for the child will appear. Enter and confirm a new password for the child's Nintendo Account.
        • Password requirements
