How to Set Up the Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer

In this article, you'll learn how to set up the Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer for use with your Nintendo 3DS family system.

This device will work using amiibo-compatible software only. Learn which games an amiibo figure is compatible with.
In order to use the Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer, your system may require a system update.
The amiibo-compatible game you are using may require a software update.

The power LED on the NFC Reader will blink momentarily when it is communicating with the handheld system.
After infrared communication is inactive for a certain period of time (5 minutes after turning the power on or approximately 90 minutes after finishing communication), the power will automatically turn off.

Complete These Steps

Ensure that wireless communication is enabled on your system.
Press the POWER button on the NFC Reader.
- The power LED will turn on blue.
- If the battery power is getting low the LED will turn red.
Place the Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer and the handheld system on a flat level surface approximately 7.5 inches (20 cm) apart or less.

Ensure that there is a clear line of sight between the infrared port on the NFC Reader and the the infrared port on the handheld system.
The infrared port location will depend on the handheld system you have:
Update the NFC Reader.
Start the amiibo-compatible game and follow the on-screen instructions.
- You may need to look up the the software manual for information on where in the game you can use your amiibo or other NFC-supported device.
Place an amiibo or other NFC-supported device on the Reader's NFC area.
