How to Connect the Wii U to a Television

In this article, you'll learn how to connect the Wii U console to a television.

Complete these steps

  1. What type of cable are you using to connect your Wii U to the television?
    1. Place the Wii U console at least 4" (10 cm) away from walls or other surfaces that may block ventilation.
    2. Ensure your television is turned off.
    3. Connect the HDMI cable to an available HDMI port on your television.
    4. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to the Wii U console.

    5. Turn your television on.
    6. Select the correct input channel on your television.
    7. Set the Wii U's TV Connection Type to HDMI.

    If you currently own a Wii, simply switch the cables plugged into the AV Multi Out Connector on the back of the Wii console to the same connector on the back of the Wii U console.

    1. Place the Wii U console at least 4" (10 cm) away from walls or other surfaces that may block ventilation.
    2. Ensure your television is turned off.
    3. Insert the colored connectors on the Wii AV Cable into the input connectors on the television. Make sure you are plugging the connectors into the holes labeled Input or In. Holes labeled Output or Out will not work. Plug the connectors into the following inputs
      • Yellow: Video Input
      • White: Audio Input Left (or Mono)
      • Red: Audio Input Right

    4. Insert the AV Multi Out plug on the Wii AV cable into the AV Multi Out connector on the back of the console.

    5. Turn on the television and the Wii U console.
    6. Select the correct input channel on your television.
    7. Set the Wii U's TV Connection Type to Non-HDMI.

    If you currently own a Wii, simply switch the cables plugged into the AV Multi Out Connector on the back of the Wii console to the same connector on the back of the Wii U console.

    1. Place the Wii U console at least 4" (10 cm) away from walls or other surfaces that may block ventilation.
    2. Ensure your television is turned off.
    3. Insert the colored connectors on the Wii Component Video cable into the input connectors on the television:
      • White: Audio Input Left (or Mono)
      • Red: Audio Input Right
      • Red/Orange: Pr/Cr (Red)
      • Blue: Pb/Cb (Blue)
      • Green: Y (Green)
      • The Red and White audio cables are bound together with a black band labeled "audio."

    4. Insert the AV Multi Out plug on the Wii Component Video cable into the AV Multi Out connector on the back of the console.

    5. Turn on the television and the Wii U console.
    6. Select the correct input channel on your television.
    7. Set the Wii U's TV Connection Type to non-HDMI.
