Play Mode Options on Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 console allows you to enjoy three different play styles:
  • TV mode
  • Tabletop mode
  • Handheld mode
TV mode

In TV mode the Nintendo Switch 2 is placed on its dock and the application screen is displayed on your television.

  • A Nintendo Switch AC adapter (HAC-002) can not be used to power a Nintendo Switch 2 when docked.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 is not compatible with a Nintendo Switch dock. Only use a Nintendo Switch 2 dock.

In order to use the Joy-Con 2 controller(s) in TV mode, they must be detached from the console. If you're using another controller, such as Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, the Joy-Con 2 don't need to be detached.

Tabletop mode

In tabletop mode, the Nintendo Switch 2 is removed from its dock, the stand on the back is opened, and the console placed on a flat surface. The screen output is displayed on the console screen.

  • A Nintendo Switch AC adapter (HAC-002) can be used to charge a Nintendo Switch 2 console when in Tabletop or Handheld mode.

In order to use the Joy-Con 2 controller(s) in Tabletop mode, they must be detached from the console. If you're using another controller, such as Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, the Joy-Con 2 don't need to be detached.

You can enjoy single or multiplayer games.

Handheld mode

In handheld mode, you play while holding the Nintendo Switch 2 with the Joy-Con 2 controllers connected to the console.

  • A Nintendo Switch AC adapter (HAC-002) can be used to charge a Nintendo Switch 2 console when in Tabletop or Handheld mode.

In this mode you can enjoy single-player games using one console, or local multiplayer games using multiple consoles.
