Nintendo Switch 2 Cannot Be Charged
Steps for when your Nintendo Switch 2 does not charge or the battery level does not increase to full while the AC adapter is plugged into the system or dock.
Important: If you have the "Stop battery charging at approximately 90%" setting turned on, your console won't charge past that point.
Before you start
You will need:
- Your Nintendo Switch 2 console
- Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (MOD. NGN-01), or other compatible AC adapter, and USB-C cable
- Access to power outlet
Remove your Nintendo Switch 2 from the dock when completing the following troubleshooting.
What to do
- Unplug the AC adapter from both the wall and dock/console. Leave unplugged for 30 seconds to reset the AC adapter.
- Hold down the POWER Button
on the console for 20 seconds.
- Release the POWER Button. This performs a forced shut down on the console.
- Plug the AC adapter back into the outlet then directly into the console.
- Try a different power outlet in case there is an issue with the first one you tried.
- It's recommended to plug the charger into an outlet directly, rather than a power strip, for testing.
- Press the POWER Button once. The console should turn back on.
-
The charging icon is displayed on a blank screen
If the battery charge on the console is nearly depleted when the AC adapter is first plugged in, the screen will remain off and a charging indicator will be momentarily displayed in the top-left corner of the console screen.
Charge the console for at least 30 minutes before trying to power it on again and see if the issue is resolved.

Situation not resolved
If the battery charging icon is not displayed or if the battery level does not reach 100% charged after several hours, there may be an issue with the AC adapter or charging ports.
- Test the AC adapter in the other USB Type-C® connector port
on the console. There is one on the top and one on the bottom of the console.
- Unplug the AC adapter from your console.
- Plug the AC adapter into another Nintendo product that uses USB-C, such as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller or the dock for your console.
- Check to see if the other device charges (if testing on a dock, you may see the power light turn on for a moment when first plugging it in).
Additional information
- Use a licensed Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter (NGN-01) for best performance results.
- If you don’t have a licensed adapter, an AC adapter with an output of 54W or more can be used, but please note, unlicensed products do not undergo Nintendo's testing and evaluation process and may have compatibility problems.
- A Nintendo Switch AC adapter (HAC-002)
can be used to charge the Nintendo Switch 2 console directly but not with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock for charging or TV mode.
- Nintendo Switch 2 consoles do not have a power light.
