Game Card Read Issues on Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2

This article can help you when:

  • A game card is inserted in a Nintendo Switch 2 but the software application cannot be opened or started.
  • If the following messages occur:
    • "Unable to start software. Return to the menu and try again."
    • "There is nothing inserted in the game card slot."/"Nothing inserted in the game card slot."
    • "System Does Not Detect a Game Card is Inserted."
    • "The game card could not be read. Please remove and reinsert it."

Before you start

You will need:

  • Your Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • An Internet connection
  • At least one problematic game card

What to do

  1. Remove the game card.

      Important: Remove a game card only while on the HOME Menu, or when the console is powered off. If you have suspended a software title, make sure you have closed it before removing its game card.
      1. Open the game card slot cover located on the top right side of your Nintendo Switch 2 console.
      2. Gently push down on the inserted game card until the card clicks. A Game Card being ejected by being pushed into the Nintendo Switch 2 console until it clicks
      3. Release the game card and it will partially eject.
      4. Slide the game card out of the game card slot and close the cover.

  2. Restart your console.
  3. Confirm that the game card is a supported type.
  4. Reinsert the game card. Make sure it's inserted properly.

      1. Open the game card slot cover located on the top right side of your Nintendo Switch 2 console.
      2. Hold the game card so that the label of the game card faces in the same direction as the Nintendo Switch 2 screen.A Game Card being inserted into a Nintendo Switch 2 console with its label facing the same direction as the screen
      3. Slide the game card into the game card slot until it clicks into place. If the game card seems difficult to insert, remove it and verify that it is facing in the correct direction.

  5. Confirm that your console has the latest system version.
  6. Check for any available software updates for the affected game card(s).
  7. Proceed based on how many game cards you're experiencing this issue with.

  • Multiple Game Cards

    If multiple game cards cannot be read, the console will need to be sent in for service. For testing purposes, please include at least two of the non-working game cards.

  • Only With One Specific Game Card
    1. Remove the game card again.

        Important: Remove a game card only while on the HOME Menu, or when the console is powered off. If you have suspended a software title, make sure you have closed it before removing its game card.
        1. Open the game card slot cover located on the top right side of your Nintendo Switch 2 console.

        3. Release the game card and it will partially eject.

    2. Use a soft, dry fabric, such as an eye glasses or screen cleaning cloth, and gently wipe down the game card. Use care so the game card isn’t damaged.
      • Dust or other foreign objects could be causing the game read issues with the problematic game card.
      • Do not use liquids when cleaning your game card to prevent damage to it and to your console.
    3. Reinsert it and test it.

    • The issue persists

      If the error continues to occur with a single game card, the issue is likely with that specific game card. The game card will need to be sent in for service, or replaced.

      • If the software is not published by Nintendo: We are unable to provide service for third-party game cards. Please try contacting the publisher of the software for assistance.
      • If the software is published by Nintendo: Please set up a service request for the non-working game card with Nintendo.
  • I Only Have One Game Card
    1. Remove the game card again.

    4. If possible, try testing a different game card. This could avoid having to send in the console for unneeded service.
      • The issue occurs with multiple game cards

        If multiple game cards cannot be read, the console will need to be sent in for service. For testing purposes, please include at least two of the non-working game cards.

    • The issue persists with one game card
      • If the issue persists and another game card is not available to attempt to duplicate the issue, the system and the game card will need to come in for evaluation.
