How to Start a Multiplayer Game (Mario Party Superstars)

Follow these steps to start a multiplayer game in Mario Party Superstars.

Note
  • Up to 4 players can play on a single system offline.
  • In Local Play and Online Play with Friends, up to 3 players can play on each system.
  • In a Global Game (Online Play with random players around the world), only 1 player can play on each system.
  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership and a copy of the Mario Party Superstars game is required on each system to play online.
  • Voice Chat is available using the Nintendo Switch App while playing online in a Friend Game.

Complete these steps

Start the Mario Party Superstars game from the HOME Menu and choose how you'd like to play.

  1. How do you want to play?
    1. Select Offline Game.
    2. Select the number of players, up to 4, then connect a controller for each player.
    3. If desired, link a User account to any of the additional players. When linked, those players will keep any coins and Mario Party Lv. points they earn during play in their own User save data.
      • If a User account isn't linked, "Guest" will appear under their controller icon.
    4. When you reach the map screen, Player 1 can select the game mode and settings.
    1. Select Local Play.
    2. Decide if you want to create a room to host a game for others to join, or join an existing room that another player is hosting.
    Will you be creating a room or joining one?
    1. Select Online Play.
    2. Decide if you want to play a Global Game with random players online or a Friend Game with friends you have registered.
    What kind of online game will you play?
    1. Select Create Room.
    2. Select whether or not to set a passcode. If set, other players will need to enter the passcode in order to join the game.
    3. Set the number of players, up to 3, who will play on your system, then connect a controller for each player.
    4. If desired, link a User account to any of the additional players. When linked, those players will keep any coins and Mario Party Lv. points they earn during play in their own User save data.
      • If a User account isn't linked, "Guest" will appear under their controller icon.
    5. Wait for the remaining systems and players to join.
    6. Select the game mode and settings, then get ready to play!
    1. Select Join Room.
    2. Select the room you want to join once it is found.
      • If the host set a passcode, you will need to enter the code to join.
    3. Set the number of players, up to the max number of remaining slots, who will play on your system, then connect a controller for each player.
    4. If desired, link a User account to any of the additional players. When linked, those players will keep any coins and Mario Party Lv. points they earn during play in their own User save data.
      • If a User account isn't linked, "Guest" will appear under their controller icon.
    5. Wait for the remaining systems and players to join.
    6. The host will select the game mode and settings, then get ready to play!
    1. Select Global Game.
    2. When you reach the map screen, select the game mode you'd like to play.
      • In Mt. Minigames, you can play a variety of minigame challenges against random players around the world.
      • In Mario Party, you can select which rules and boards you'd like to play and match with random players who have selected the same preferences.
      • In a Global Game, only one player can join per system. There are some modes, such as Tag Match and Trio Challenge in Mt. Minigames, that can only be played after joining a Friend Game.
    1. Select Friend Game.
    2. Decide if you want to create a room to host a game for others to join or join an existing room that another player is hosting.
    Will you be creating a room or joining one?
    1. Select Create Room.
    2. Set the Entry Restrictions to Friends Only or Open to All.
      • Open to All will allow players you have not registered as Friends to join, but they will need the unique Room ID to find the room.
    3. Select whether or not to set a passcode. If set, other players will need to enter the passcode in order to join the game.
    4. Set the number of players, up to 3, who will play on your system, then connect a controller for each player.
    5. If desired, link a User account to any of the additional players. When linked, those players will keep any coins and Mario Party Lv. points they earn during play in their own User save data.
      • If a User account isn't linked, "Guest" will appear under their controller icon.
    6. Wait for the remaining systems and players to join. While waiting, you can...
      • Press the X Button to invite a Friend to your room.
      • Press the R Button to start a Voice Chat room in your Nintendo Switch App.
      • Press the Y Button to view the restrictions you set on the room.
      • View the unique Room ID. You must share this Room ID with any players you have not registered as Friends in order for them to locate your room.
    7. Select the game mode and settings, then get ready to play!
    1. Select Join Room.
    2. Select whether to Find a Friend's Room or Search by Room ID.
      • Find a Friend's Room will search for all rooms opened by your registered Friends.
      • Search by Room ID allows you to enter a unique Room ID associated with a room a hosting player has opened, whether or not that player is a registered Friend. The hosting player will need to share this Room ID with you.
    3. Select the room you want to join once it is found.
      • If the host set a passcode, you will need to enter the code to join.
    4. Set the number of players, up to the max number of remaining slots, who will play on your system, then connect a controller for each player.
    5. If desired, link a User account to any of the additional players. When linked, those players will keep any coins and Mario Party Lv. points they earn during play in their own User save data.
      • If a User account isn't linked, "Guest" will appear under their controller icon.
    6. Wait for the remaining systems and players to join.
    7. The host will select the game mode and settings, then get ready to play!
