How to Start a Multiplayer Game (Super Mario Party)

Steps for how to begin a local or online multiplayer game in Super Mario Party on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
Note
- To play games in Toad's Rec Room across multiple screens, two consoles and two copies of the Super Mario Party are required.
- Due to differing screen sizes, the play experience of Toad's Rec Room may change when playing with a combination of Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, Nintendo Switch, or Nintendo Switch Lite consoles.
- Some game modes and minigames cannot be played online.
Before you start
You will need:
- Your Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console
- Super Mario Party software, updated to the latest version

How to update game software
- Ensure the console is connected to the Internet.
- From the HOME Menu, select (but do not start) the icon for the software you wish to update.
- Press the + Button or – Button on your controller, then select Software Update followed by Via the Internet.

For online play, you will also need:
- An Internet connection
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership
Complete these steps
Launch Super Mario Party from the Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch HOME Menu and select your user account.
How do you want to play?

Local (players in same room)
- Select the number of consoles and players.
- Up to four players can play on a single Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console offline.
- Up to two consoles can connect locally. Both consoles must each have a copy of the software.
- Each player must use a single Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controller.
- Note: The Joy-Con 2 controller is only compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
- Pair each Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con controller.

How to pair Joy-Con to Nintendo Switch 2
Important: It is not possible to attach Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers to the Nintendo Switch 2 console. They can only be used wirelessly.
- From the HOME Menu, select ControllersControlesManettesControles.
- Select Change Grip and Order.
- From the Change Grip and Order screen
, press and hold down the SYNC Button
for at least one second on the controller you wish to pair.
- Once paired, the player LED(s) corresponding to the controller number will remain lit.
- Confirm how the Joy-Con will be held.
Important
- By doing the Button Pairing alone, the console will not be able to tell if the Joy-Con will be held as a dual-controller grip, or if the Joy-Con will be held horizontally as individual controllers.
- To confirm how the Joy-Con will be used, press the L Button/R Buttons as indicated below while on this screen.
How to Use the Joy-Con Buttons to Press As a dual-controller grip 
L Button (on left Joy-Con) + R Button (on right Joy-Con) ZL Button (on left Joy-Con) + ZR Button (on right Joy-Con) As a solo horizontal grip 
SL Button + SR Button on each Joy-Con you wish to use horizontally

How to pair Joy-Con controllers to Nintendo Switch Lite
- Select Controllers from the HOME Menu.
- Select Change Grip and Order. The remaining steps will be done while on this screen
. - Press and hold down the SYNC Button for at least one second on the controller you wish to pair. Once paired, the player LED(s) corresponding to the controller number will remain lit.
- Press the L Buttons/R Buttons as indicated below to confirm how the Joy-Con will be held. The console won't be able to tell how you intend to hold the controllers if you do the Button Pairing alone.
How to Use the Joy-Con Buttons to Press As a dual-controller grip 
L Button (on left Joy-Con) + R Button (on right Joy-Con) ZL Button (on left Joy-Con) + ZR Button (on right Joy-Con) As a solo horizontal grip 
SL Button + SR Button on each Joy-Con you wish to use horizontally

How to pair Joy-Con to Nintendo Switch 2
- Each player will select a character. If there are fewer than four players, you will be prompted to select computer players by difficulty level.
- Select the game mode you wish to play by exploring the plaza.
- After you have discovered a game mode in the plaza for the first time, you can quickly select it from the Party Pad.
- Select the number of consoles and players.
