How to Create a Suspend Point in Nintendo Classics Games

Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch - OLED Model

Follow these steps to save your game progress by creating a Suspend Point in the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, or Nintendo GameCube classic game libraries.

Before you start

  • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to access the Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Classics, Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Classics, and Game Boy - Nintendo Classics game libraries.
  • An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership is required to access the Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Classics, Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics: MATURE 17+, SEGA Genesis - Nintendo Switch Online, Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics, Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics, and Virtual Boy - Nintendo Classics game libraries. The Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics library is exclusively playable on Nintendo Switch 2.

Complete these steps

  1. While playing a game in one of the classic game libraries, open the Suspend Menu.
    • How to start a Nintendo Classics game
      1. Access the classic game library software you wish to play.
      2. From the menu on the left, select whether you want to play as one player, play with multiple players on the same system, or play online, then select how you want to hold the controller(s).
        • For single player, you can play in handheld mode, or play in Tabletop or TV mode with any compatible controllers.
        • For multiple players, play in Tabletop or TV mode with a compatible controller for every player.
        • Note that for the Game Boy - Nintendo Classics and Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics game libraries, it is not possible to play with multiple players on the same system.
      3. Select a game from the from the library and press the A Button, then use the on-screen instructions to set your game preferences and to start the game.
    • How to open the Suspend Menu in Nintendo Classics games

      Note: If you have "Show controls in game" enabled in Settings, the inputs to open the Suspend Menu will be displayed at the bottom of the screen while playing.

      • Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Classics: Press the ZL Button and ZR Button, or when using the NES Controller press the L Button and R Button.
      • Super Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Classics: Press the ZL Button and ZR Button.
      • Game Boy - Nintendo Classics: Press the ZL Button and ZR Button.
      • Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics: Press the - (Minus) Button, or when using the Nintendo 64 Controller press the ZR Button.
      • Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics: MATURE 17+: Press the - (Minus) Button, or when using the Nintendo 64 Controller press the ZR Button.
      • SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online: Press the ZL Button and ZR Button, or when using the SEGA Genesis Control Pad press the MODE Button.
      • Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics: Press the ZL Button and ZR Button.
      • Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics: Press the - (Minus) Button, or when using the GameCube Controller press the ZL Button.
      • Virtual Boy - Nintendo Classics: Press the ZL Button and ZR Button.
  2. Select Create Suspend Point.
  3. Select an available save slot to store your game progress.
    • Once saved, the selected slot will display the timestamp of when the Suspend Point was created.
    • If all four save slots have been used, you can save your new game progress over an existing Suspend Point. Keep in mind that once save data has been overwritten, it cannot be recovered.

Additional information

If playing multiplayer, Player 1 will navigate the menu and make the desired selections.

  • You cannot create or load a Suspend Point while playing a multiplayer game in the Game Boy - Nintendo Classics and Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics libraries.
