Error Message: Unable to Read the Disc / Disc Could Not Be Read

Wii & Wii mini

The information in this article can help you when:

  • The Wii console will not play game discs (disc is not recognized).
  • The system displays either error message "Unable to read disc" or "Disc could not be read."
Note
  • The Wii and Wii mini consoles are compatible with games designed for the Wii console. Discs made for other gaming consoles and other media formats (DVD, Blu-ray) will not play in the Wii.
    • The original Wii model (RVL-001) is also compatible with games designed for the GameCube. This model is identified by a row of GameCube controller ports along its top or left side, depending on placement.
  • Game discs are region encoded. If the game disc you are using is intended for a region different than your Wii, the disc will not play in your console.

What to do

  1. Eject the problematic disc if it is still in the system.
  2. Power the system off and ensure it is placed correctly.
  3. After 30 seconds has passed, power the Wii back on.
  4. Insert the disc. Be sure to verify you are inserting it correctly.
  1. Are you still receiving a disc read error?
  2. Visually inspect the disc(s). If the discs look dirty or damaged, clean them. Sometimes a dirty disc can appear damaged, but just needs to be cleaned.

After cleaning your disc(s), do they appear damaged?

If the disc plays without error, please continue to use your Wii as normal.

  3. The damaged disc(s) will need to be replaced. For assistance with damaged game discs, please see our information on Game Disc Replacement.

If this issue is occurring with multiple discs, or you only own a single disc, your Wii will need to be replaced. If this issue is occurring with a single disc, there may be specific troubleshooting for the game.
