Unable to Adjust Volume on the Nintendo Switch Console

This article can help you when:

  • You're unable to adjust the volume on a Nintendo Switch console.
  • One or both of the volume buttons are not responding on a Nintendo Switch console.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Your Nintendo Switch console

Complete these steps

Which system are you using?

  • Nintendo Switch – OLED Model

    Important: While the console is docked, the sound from the console speakers will automatically shut off.

    1. Confirm your console has the latest system update.
    2. With the console undocked, unplug any headphones from the console.
      • If the setting Mute when Headphones are Disconnected is turned on, by unplugging a headphone set, the sound on the console speakers will be muted until the volume buttons are pressed, or until this setting is manually turned off.
    3. Restart the console.

        1. Press and hold the POWER ButtonThe POWER and Volume Buttons highlighted on Nintendo Switch for at least three seconds.
        2. Select Power OptionsOpciones de apagadoOptions d'alimentationOpções de desligar.
        3. Select Restart.
    4. Start a game or application and turn up the volume by pressing the + Button The POWER and Volume Buttons highlighted on the Nintendo Switch on the console, or adjust the volume from the Quick Settings screen.
      • When the console is undocked and either of the volume buttons are pressed, the volume level indicator will be momentarily displayed on the top left corner of the console screen.
    5. If the issue persists, try using a different game or application.

    Situation not resolved

    If the volume level indicator is not momentarily displayed when the volume buttons are pressed, or if the volume on the console cannot be adjusted using the volume buttons or from the Quick Settings screen, then the Nintendo Switch console will need to be serviced.
