Nintendo Switch Game Card Read Issues (Including Error Message: "Nothing Inserted in the Game Card Slot")

Follow these steps when a game card is inserted in a Nintendo Switch console but the software application cannot be opened or started. Possible messages:

  • “Unable to start software. Return to the menu and try again."
  • "There is nothing inserted in the game card slot."
  • "System Does Not Detect a Game Card is Inserted."
  • "The game card could not be read. Please remove and reinsert it."
Nintendo Switch consoles are only compatible with game cards made for Nintendo Switch software.
  • Game cards for Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive software are not compatible with Nintendo Switch. Example Nintendo Switch 2 game card, Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card, and Nintendo Switch game card, side by side.
  • Game cards for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Nintendo Switch software can be inserted and played on Nintendo Switch. Only the Nintendo Switch version of the software will be played with none of the enhancements in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Game Cards for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Nintendo Switch 2 games, side by side.

Before you start

In order for Nintendo Switch to properly read game cards, these must be inserted into the game card slot with the label facing the same direction as the console screen.
