Image Quality Appears Poor or Television Not Displaying in 1080p

The information in this article can help you when the television is not displaying Wii U content in 1080p.
Important
- 1080p resolution is only supported if you have connected your Wii U console to your TV via an HDMI or Wii Component Video cable.
- If, at any point, you need to switch the type of cable being used, such as HDMI to AV, you will need to use the Wii U GamePad to change the display settings.
Note: Content in Wii Mode will still be displayed in standard definition (480i/480p), even if you are using a HDMI/Component Cable and the Wii U display settings are set to a higher resolution.
Possible solutions
- The Wii U will cause most televisions with HDMI communication turned on to switch to Game Mode automatically. On some televisions, Game Mode can cause a decrease in video quality. You can resolve this issue by disablling HDMI communication on the television. Please see the television's manual, or contact the television's manufacturer, for instructions. The name of this setting, and the method for disabling this communication are different from television to television.
- Ensure that your TV supports 1080p, and that it is set to the correct settings.
- This information should be located in the TV's manual.
- If you are using a Wii Component Video cable, your television, or the media you are viewing, may force the resolution to be lower than 1080p. Check the media and your TV's manual for information.
- Check that the Wii U console settings are correct.
- Verify the Wii U connection to the TV by checking the HDMI connection or the Wii Component Video cable connection.
- Try another port on your TV if one is available.
- Try a different cable if one is available.
Situation not resolved
If the image quality continues to display poorly, there is an issue with the Wii U console and HDMI or Wii Component Video cable.
